Kurumaya Masaaki
For all those yearning for the Japanese Taiko origins and longing to know their real meaning, for those wishing to follow the Taiko Do, there’s a Master in Japan, Kurumaya Masaaki Sensei. He is the main representative and the bearer of the traditional Mitsuuchi style. Kurumaya Masaaki meets Taiko in 1969, when he is 18 years old. As well as Jazz and traditional Japanese music, he begins studying high quality Taiko music. In 1981 he launches the “Echizen Hibiki Daiko” Taiko group, with whom he plays in many festivals all around Japan. The “Hibiki”are heirs to the traditional playing way of Fukui and, at the same time, they assume new musical themes. Abroad, Kurumaya Sensei performes in Cannes, London, Glasgow, China, America, and Italy. In London, he plays together with the English professional group “Mugenkyo”. From 1998 to 2000 he lives and teaches in Great Britain; in those years he performes with the English group all over Europe. In 2000 he opens the “Kurumaya Taiko Dojo” and, since then, he dedicates himself to teaching and playing as a performer. In 2001 rises the “Kurumaya Group”, as a cooperation among Sensei and talented musicians from Fukui. As a result of this cooperation, but always referring to the Mitsuuchi rhythm, new pieces with traditional features are born. One who attends one of their show perceives the new heartbeat arose from the connection of two generations. This pulse is an every moment expression of the meeting of the Sound, expression of the Japanese Spirit that goes far beyond the phisical effort. Listening to Kurumaya Sensei is a never felt emotion. The spectator is enchanted by the harmony among the artists as well as by the excellence of the sound and he is carried away to a superior dimension.
